Quick guide: Manarola, Cinque Terre, Italy

Manarola, Cinque Terre, liguria, Italy

Manarola and Riomaggiore (tomorrow’s post) are both in the Commune di Riomaggiore, which has about 1.800 citizens. The two villages are the two closests in Cinque Terre; Via dell’Amore – the path of love – runs between them, and only takes about 25 minutes to walk. Unfortunately, this path was badly damaged in the flash floods of 2011, but is due to reopen in 2015. Since all the loved up couples who are visiting Manarola can’t walk this trail, they attach engraved padlocks to the fence on the path to Corniglia instead (also closed), I guess for good luck and to leave something behind in one of the most romantic spots in the world.

Manarola’s main source of income is wine production, but fishing is also important, as you can see from all the little fishing boats that are scattered throughout the main street. Sights to see are a church towards the top of the main street, as well as a little chapel and a fortress at the top of the hill, from where you can see the trail winding its way towards Corniglia. You can also go for a dip in the Mediterranean – Manarola doesn’t have a beach, but the brave kids love to jump from the rocks into the deep water and lie sunbathing on the boat slips. Italians are the best at appreciating the sun and the sea. I love it!

You can read about the other beautiful villages in Cinque Terre here: Monterosso, Corniglia, Vernazza.

A 180 m long tunnel takes you from the train station to the village. It ends under the elevated piazza in the middle of the main street

You can see Corniglia from the habour! This is the second shortest stretch to hike. The path of love to Riomaggiore is the shortest
