Fashionably Blue & Grey

Tall Girl's Fashion // Styling a grey pencil skirt

Today’s outfit is from day two of Oslo fashion week. I’ve already told you the story of how I got my hands on this embellished top and shown you how I styled it off-duty with jeans and a fedora.

This time I went more dressy and added a grey pencil skirt. Since I don’t have much of a waist and both the top and the skirt have a straight, narrow cut, I added a belt to give me more of an hourglass shape.

I have a few rules that I go by when I wear a narrow bottom such as a pencil skirt, mini skirt or narrow shorts, since I have a quite athletic body shape:

  • I wear something wide on top, to balanse out the narrow cut of the bottom. Often I’ll show some cleavage, if that is appropriate for the setting, as the width of the top may need a touch of sexy to make the outfit more womanly
  • I wear something narrow on top with a belt at the waist, to give myself an hourglass shape
  • I wear a blazer that hits at the lower hip/bum (if you are shorter, let it hit you at the higher hip). The jacket should have a defined waist to give me an hourglass shape — if it doesn’t, I’ll belt it at the waist, or at the very least belt the top underneath or wear the top tucked into the bottom
  • When it comes to colour, I wear the brightest colour on the body part I like the most and want to be the centre of attention. Have you got a great bum? Wear a bright or patterned pencil skirt and a more neutral top. Good legs? Wear amazing shoes. A great cleavage? Wear a bright or patterned top with a lower neckline so this grabs most of the attention. In all cases, I’ll wear black or another dark colour (solid or subtle print) on the body part I want to play down

Enough lessons for today. What is your favourite skirt shape? I quite like the pencil skirt, as it suits my body type. Additionally, I love to twirl in a full skirt, though I feel it adds about five kilos to my body. Adding a tight-fitting top and heels will compensate for the extra volume of the skirt, though. Luckily, us tall girls are able to wear more bulky clothing and still appear vaguely slender, as we have more height to distribute the bulk on!

PS // See how I styled this pencil skirt with tights and a printed blouse early in the spring.

  • Ah, I see you’re getting your wear out of your new acquisition! Yep, I think you’re going to wear this one a lot! And it looks just as nice styled this way as it did the other.
