Dressing Down a Pencil Skirt

Tall Girl's Fashion // Dressing down a pencil skirt

To get the most mileage out of my wardrobe, I try to wear my clothes in as many different ways as possible. A pencil skirt won’t just be worn with a white shirt and a blazer for work, but might as well be paired with a chunky sweater and heavy boots for my days off.

Similarly, I won’t let the torrential rains and freezing winds of Bergen keep me from wearing my skirts and dresses. As Helly Hansen famously says, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only badly suited clothing. So yes, I wore this outfit when I visited my tribe back in Bergen last weekend and it rained for five days straight.

I paired the skirt with a short-sleeved cashmere top and a merino wool cardigan, both old friends in my closet that kept me warm in the nasty weather. Colourwise I kept to the two colours in the skirt, which are navy and plum. This made the outfit kinda low key, yet suitably put together. Admittedly, I would have looked chicer in a pair of heels, but knee-high boots were the obvious choice in the rain.

This pencil skirt is one of the most fun skirts I have in my closet — I love both the polkadots and the happy colour combination. It’s also very stretchy and soft, which is always a good thing when you take long steps like we tall girls do!

Do you have a skirt that makes you smile and also is particularly comfortable to wear? Please share below, as I’m a nosy Nelly (aka mum’s dog, who follows me into the loo, sticks her nose in my handbag/shoe/pocket/book and goes nuts if I’m closer than 2 metres to the front door)!

PS // See how I styled this skirt previously here on the blog.

  • I love everything about this outfit! You are so right about a pencil skirt with stretch; I don’t realise what long strides I take until I’m wearing a pencil skirt with no stretch! I have so many skirts, I’m not sure which is my favourite. Probably a pleated midi skirt, of which I have many! x Allison

    • Haha, this reminds me of a bus incident. I have a pencil skirt that has neither stretch nor a lit in the back. The first time I wore it to work I nearly missed my bus! I had to run along like a geisha only moving my legs very quickly from the knees down in order to catch some speed — it was impossible to (speed) walk normally in it! I’ve delegated that skirt to dates and drinks — it’s for posing only! 😀 Pleated midis are great and always make me feel so feminine. I have a grey wool blend midi that I haven’t worn on the blog yet. Thanks for inspiring me to wear it next week, Allison! xoxo Anett
