How To Knit a Christmas Piglet

Tall Girl's Fashion // Knit a cute Christmas piglet -- Easy

As I was retreiving my knitting supplies from the basement to get cracking on this year’s Christmas gifts, I came across a knitting pattern for this cute little piglet. It’s the perfect pet for my handmade Santa couples!

Since the piglet is so cute and incredibly easy to make — you only need to know how to knit basic stitches, both in the round and back and forth, and basic crochet — I’m sharing the instructions with you.

My piggies are made of pastel pink wool yarn, but you can make them out of cotton or any other blend that fits the gauge. They will look great hanging on the tree or as place card holders — punch a hole in the name card and thread it on to the satin ribbon before you tie the ribbon around the pig.

There’s nothing like a cute nursery rhyme to get you in the right spirits:

This little piggy went to the market

This little piggy stayed at home

This little piggy had bread and butter

This little piggy had none

And this little piggy went wee wee wee, all the way home.

INSTRUCTIONS

Instruction in Norwegian follows below.

Knitting needles // 3-3,5.

Knitting gauge // Approximately 24 sts equals 10 cm

Crochet hook // Size 3-3,5 (European)

Yarn // Any yarn that approximately fits the gauge. Remember this is a small project, so the gauge isn’t that important — you’ll just en up with a slightly skinnier or plumper piglet! I used Heilo/Falk from Dalegarn (Dale Yarn USA)

Strikkepinner // 3-33,5

Strikkefasthet // 24 m måler 10 cm i bredden

Body // Keeping a longish end, cast on 30 sts on stocking needles and join in the round. Using knit sts, knit until your work measures 7 cm. On the next round, knit 2 together, k3, until the end. Knit 3 rounds without decreasing. Knit 2 together, k2, until the end. Knit 2 rounds without decreasing. Knit 2 together, k1, until the end. Knit 1 round without decreasing. Knit 2 together until the end of the round. Cut off the yarn and pull the thread through all remaining sts. Fasten the final thread on the inside.

Stuff firmly with polyester filling and sew up the back with the initial thread.

Strikk rundt i glattstrikk 7 cm. På neste omgang strikk 2 m smn, 3 rett ut omg. Strikk 3 omg uten felling. Strikk 2 m smn, 2 r ut omg. Strikk 3 omg uten felling. Strikk 2 m smn, 1 r ut omg. Strikk 3 omg uten felling.

Snout // Using a 3-3,5 crochet hook, make a slip knot, then crochet 5 slip stitches. Join in a loop with a slip stitch, make 1 slip stitch, then crochet 10 single crochet around the circle. Join with 1 slip stitch in the first single crochet on the row. Cut the thread. Fasten the initial thread. Use the final thread to attach the snout to the pointy end of the body.

Ears // Keeping a longish end, cast on 7 sts and knit 3 cm back and forth using knit sts. Then knit 2 together at the start of every row until one st remains. Cut the thread, pull it through the last stitch and fasten the end down along the side of the ear, so it won’t show. Sew the ears to the side of the body, so the tip is about 0,5 cm from the snout and there’s approximately 1 cm between the ears up on top, using the inital thread.

Tail // Keeping a longish end, cast on 3 sts and knit 5 cm back and forth using knit sts. Cast off and fasten the end down along the side of the tail, so it won’t show. Tie a knot in the middle of the tail. Use the initial thread to attach the tail to the bum of the piglet.

Legs // Keeping a longish end, cast on 10 sts on a double pointed needle, divide the sts between three (or four) double pointed knitting needles and join in the round. Knit 10 rounds using knit sts, then knit 2 together until the end of the round. Cut off the thread and pull it through the remaning sts. Stuff the leg tightly with polyester filling. Fasten the end by sewing it through the filling a few times.

Knit three more legs in the same way. Use the initial thread to attach the legs to the body. The hind legs are placed about 1 cm from the bottom of the piglet with ca 1 cm between the legs. The front legs are placed right before the initial decrease for the head.

Strikk rett rundt  i 10 omg.

Once all the legs are attached, use black thread and knot sts to sew two nostils on the snout. Make eyes by sewing a few short basting sts on top of each other to form a small circle. Finally, tie a red silk ribbon around the body of the piglet and make a bow on top.

Adorable piglet! You’re very talented, Anett!

    • Thank you, Susan. All it takes is a bit of practice – mum taught me how to knit when I was little. I think it’s so much fun to make cute small things like this! Xoxo Anett
