Happy Thoughts

Tall Girl's Fashion // Happy Thoughts

After feeling rather moody and demotivated in November and December, I’m kicking off the new year by reintroducing my column Happy Thoughts, where I list all the little things that made me happy and inspired in the past week.

I’m doing this for me more than anybody else — writing Happy Thoughts does wonders for my mood, as I’m forced to take status of my every day life and my doings. I always realise that lots of great little things are happening around me, maybe even on a plain old Monday morning when I’d rather have stayed in bed than battling the snow outside — the tiny snowflakes might look like slowly drifting glitter against the bright sunlight. I just don’t take the time to properly appreciate all the greatness around me.

If you feel your life is more mundane and routine-based than you’d like, give it a try. Just write a list of all the things that made you happy in the previous week. I bet you’ll be surprised by what you see! Here we go with my list:

{1} DIY workshop

I spent most of November and December evenings in front of the TV making Christmas gifts for friends and family. Despite it being slightly exhausting because of the time crunch, I had so much fun that I’ve kept at it and have already created a few gifts for birthdays and next Christmas. Aren’t these delicate crochet snowflakes pretty?

{2} Plate protectors

My friend E has some lovely plate protectors (I don’t know if this is the correct word in English, but I’ll just go with it until someone corrects me) that I’ve been admiring every time I’ve been over for dinner. I asked mum if she could make me some, as she always gives me a handembroidered tablecloth for my birthday, but she can’t find the embroidery kits anywhere.

When I ran out of yarn making pot holders and mini hearts (in the top photograph), I looked through my pattern collection looking for a new project. That’s when I found instructions for two types of plate protectors: I’ve already used up my red yarn making the round Christmassy ones and are now in the process of crocheting the delicate white hearts. The hearts are the most intricate crocheting I’ve ever done and I think they look so, so pretty. Mission accomplished!

{3} Panduro sale

In my posts on making your own Christmas cards and gift tags, I mentioned that you should look for hole punches and other craft supplies in early January, as craft stores such as Panduro starts their biannual sales. I was lucky and just picked up this snowflake punch and natural paper doilies for 50 % off.

{4} Christmas reading

Over Christmas, gifts finally completed and a well-deserved rest in order, I read two great novels. I love anything by the British author Jojo Moyes — her writing always makes me cry and laugh out loud, often within seconds of each other. This time I read After you, the sequel to the international bestseller Me before you. I wasn’t dissapointed — the book started with a bang with the main character falling off a roof. The big questions is whether this was an accident or a suicide attempt? And how about that cute paramedic who rescued her? Next up was Liane Moriarty’s Big little lies, set in an Australian seaside town and tackling the intrigues — and intriguing secrets — of the couples sending their children to the local school.

{5} Blossoming orchids

Strangely, most of my orchids decide to bloom at once, and now it’s time for the winter blooming. When I left for Bergen there were buds all over the place and now I’m back, some of the buds have sprung. Orchids have such beautiful flowers and they’ll last forever if you treat the plants well — which basically means that you should neglect them most of the time.

{6} Silver spoons

When I visited mum at Christmas she kindly gave me these silver spoon that she thinks used to belong to my great grandmother on her side. After some much overdue polishing, they look so pretty. I’m really excited about finally owning some proper silverware and plan on trying to find more in the same pattern.
