I’ve come to realise that I wear a lot of blue.
Purple, black and grey I love and are in frequent — and conscious — rotation in my wardrobe, but when looking at the outfits I’ve posted on the blog lately I also see a lot of blue clothes. Where did they all come from?!?
Just to prove my point, today I’m giving you yet another blue outfit. Monday is a blue kind of day anyway, isn’t it?
I’m wearing a form-fitting dress by the Norwegian designer Berit Hjelde with a black silk blouse on top, both for modesty (the dress is very tight so you can see every shrimp I eat) and to stay warm. The outfit was worn to the Minor Majority concert I went to a couple of weeks’ back in Horten (read about it here and here).
I use today’s layering trick whenever a dress is either:
- A smidgen too tight — permanently or at the moment — so I wouldn’t want to wear it by itself
- A fancy evening-style dress that I’d like to wear during the day
To get the best result, play around with different tops that you think will look good with the dress. Just remember that opposites attract, both in volume (tight vs voluminous), fabric (tweed vs silk, shiny vs matte), colours (print vs solids, bold prints vs neutral colours) and styles (dressy vs boho, leather vs chiffon).
A chubby sweater over a fancy dress will look edgy and immediately make the dress daytime appropriate. Adding a neutral top, for instance grey, over a brightly patterned dress, will ensure that the dress makes a more subtle and quirky statement.
Just don’t be tempted to wear the usual blazer, cardigan or open shirt on top, because we can all be more creative than that, right? Or is that just my resolution for 2016?!? #savingmoney
